Get me to the coast!

And pack me an umbrella….  its gonna be soggy.

Yes folks, my weather jinx on races continues.   The most positive thing I can think of right now is, well at least I won’t get heatstroke!  Because this?  Is comical! IMG_4399

Sure, its only Wednesday.  It can change.  And 40’s no problem. Rain? Eh, been there done that.  Wind?  Sure. But all together?  Its hilarious.  Does that really say 40mph wind gusts?

That should make for some impressive waves….just hoping none of them come crashing up over the sea wall.  Who know the race needed a “Warning: You May Get Wet” sign.

So sure….  this makes me rethink my outfit.  Because, really, isn’t that what taper is for?  You’ve done the work, you’ve got way more time on your hands and so your focus turns to clothing.  And race goals.  I’ve got three scenarios now.

Scenario 1.  Bought the tank oh, two months ago.  And the skirt to go with it.  Because, the race logo is a mermaid.  Plus May can be warm.  So channeling my inner Ariel.  Also, race goal with this outfit?  Potential PR.IMG_4401

Scenario 2.  Last week – watching the weather get colder.  Okay, 40’s can be fast.  Just gotta swap the tank for a tee shirt (boo!) and add some arm warmers.  Cuz we hafta sparkle.  Still, this is a FAST outfit.  And if the wind isn’t terrible, we can so break 4:30, if not PR.IMG_4402

Scenario 3.  Based on the weather posted above as of this morning?  Lets not melt…  I do have a purple jacket (I ran my 2nd marathon – also a drizzly cold mess – in it) but its oddly vanished.  If i can find it – i’ll swap it for the pink.  Because purple is always faster. Also, we may need to go hat over visor.  Dang.  IMG_4403

This one needs some work….  because I have a hunch its gonna be the one.

Come hell or high-water (which is a possibility. LOL) tho,  i am wearing the mermaid skirt.  Just might end up with pants under it.

But, no matter what…I WILL have fun.  And I WILL run my best. And I WILL have some good stories to tell.  Because one of the water stops is labeled “Sheep Farm” – how can that NOT be adorable.  And there are m&m’s at mile 25.  (woohoo!).

Maine Coast Marathon?  I’m coming for ya…give me your worst.  I got this!

Does mother nature hate runners?

Because seriously – i’m feeling like she’s out to get me.

Is she drunk? Feeling mean-spirited?  Was the full moon affecting her? Because this whole 50’s during the week followed by sub-zero windchills on the weekend for two weeks is just total BS.

I do appreciate that I have at least been able to run outside a couple times in the past two weeks.  I just wish that one of them had been a long run.

Yes, for the second Sunday in a row, it was netflix & ‘mill.  Because if I wasn’t going to run in -3 for a medal, I sure as heck wasn’t going to do it for nothing.

And can I just say how mentally challenging it is to run 14 miles on a treadmill? In a row… I mean sure, 14 miles total is no biggie if its over oh…four days. LOL  But 14 all at once?  There’s no tv show in the world good enough to get you through that.

At mile 5 I started the calculations…the old well, since i’m running slower, then if I run by time versus distance I really only need to run x many miles to have the same effect.  #runnermath At some point I decided even 10 miles would be enough…as long as I readded those 4 miles back in somewhere else so I still reached my weekly goal.  #runnerlogic

I think it was around mile 8 1/2, when I grabbed a bottle of water, dropped in a nuun tablet and headed back down to the ‘gym’ that I realized that come hell or high water I was getting in that 14.  Even if I had to walk.  Because there was leftover pizza in the fridge and I was going to earn it. #runnerpride

And somehow…I did.  Speed intervals, hill intervals, strategic walk breaks, another episode of Ultimate Beastmaster…whatever it took to keep the mind and legs moving.  It wasn’t pretty, but it was done. And sometimes that’s all that matters.

Of course…yesterday we got SNOW.  Fortunately not as much as they predicted but still…its going to be a few more days before it clears enough for outside running.  And oh look – more snow in the forecast for the weekend.

I so would prefer not having to do yet another long run on the treadmill…. anyone know how we can bribe mother nature into playing nice this weekend?  Maybe if we give her enough green beer Friday night she’ll sleep late and I can get out early Saturday.  LOL

Of course, i’m not just thinking about me.  Because there are oh, thousands of runners all getting ready for the Boston marathon that need their long runs too!  And I know from experience that training in the cold and then having it warm on race day makes the race a little harder.  So please mother nature…for all my fellow unicorns.  Can we just have one nice weekend?????  Or at least move along to April.  I’m so over March.

Hibernation

I appear to have reached the section of winter where I just want to hibernate.

Especially considering it was absurdly negative temps in the Northeast over the weekend.

I have not run in three days. Yep. Three.

And yet, I’m oddly okay with it.

Saturday is usually a rest day anyway. And as we were away over the weekend and I knew it would be too cold to run Sunday, I made an ice skating date with my aunt instead. In an indoor rink of course.

Aren’t we adorbs? 🙂 and yes, I did look up after to see how far around a standard rink is.

It’s a 1/10 of a mile. Since we skated for an hour, we had to have covered at least 3 miles, right?

Monday was supposed to be a run day. We headed home early and there was plenty of time to get out for a few miles. But I just couldn’t do it.

My house was really cold when we got back, and I was shivering so much the thought of going outside in 20 degrees to run was not a happy one.

Instead, I chose the chair with a blanket, my zombie guard dog and the new episode of Walking Dead.

And I swear, I was on such an adrenaline high through it that I was almost like a workout. Lol

But it was odd for me to make a conscious choice to not run. And even odder to feel it was the right one.

My mileage for the week is gonna suck. But I’m hoping all the extra rest will make those miles I do get in, better quality.

And today – I’ll go hit a nice warm treadmill. 🙂

Happy Tuesday my friends. And happy running!
